First competition of Russian Cup 2008 took place in Toliatti (from 17th to 21st September). Vladimir is the leader after short program. Here you can see his new short program - www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEu0D1ySces . Music is a modern version of Four Seasons – Winter. Vladimir improved a lot since last season – mainly as to his jumps (all jumps are so huge with clean landing) but also in spins and presentation is so mature. His choreographer is Alla Kapranova. He landed beautiful 3axel in the beginning followed by 3flip + 3toeloop combo and 3lutz. It is great to see that he is in good form already in the beginning of the season. Anyway there is something which should be improved in his short program as soon as possible…. Last position in his sit spin and flying sit spin is effective… but definition of sit spin looks like:” Lower part of the buttocks not higher than the top of the knee of the skating leg.” I am afraid Vladimir doesn’t realize this requirement so technical specialist will not probably take this position as sit position. Step sequences are interesting and they reflect the music very well but I suppose they will be counted as level 1 maybe level 2. Vladimir’s skating skills are very good so I think he would be able to perform more difficult step sequences to get higher level. I found in ISU rules: “ Step Sequence (2 of these requierements for getting level 2, 3 for getting level 3, 4 for getting level 4): 1) Simple variety (Level 2), variety (Level 3), complexity (Level 4) of turns and steps throughout (compulsory) 2) Rotations (turns, steps) in either direction (left and right) with full body rotation covering at least 1/3 of the pattern in total for each rotational direction) 3) Moderate (full for Level 4) use of upper body movement 4) Immediate changes of rotational direction executed by rockers and/or counters and/or twizzles and/or quick steps following each other
Types of turns (executed on one foot) : three turns, twizzles, brackets, loops, counters, rockers. Types of steps (executed on one foot) : toe steps, chasses, mohawks, choctaws, curves with change of edge, cross-rolls. Simple variety: Must include at least 6 turns and 4 steps, none of the types can be counted more than twice. Variety: Must include at least 8 turns and 4 steps, none of the types can be counted more than twice. Complexity: Must include at least 5 different types of turns and 3 different types of steps all executed at least once in both directions.”I hope that Vladimir and his choreographer will do some changes in program for getting more points (especially at Grand Prix Skate Canada). With new judging system every point is very important (because one point can mean few places higher or lower in competition). It would be a pity to land all jumps perfectly but loose points because of spins and steps.
