Verner has 5 olympik rings in his head. The awaited olympic games return to the world already in 5months. Already now it's certain that the Czech figure skater has chances to win a medal.
Nothing disturbs him, he is going his own way. What his rivals do does not interest him. That's the competitive state of mind of tomas verner one of Czech rep.'s hopes to win in a medal in the Vancouver olympic games in 2010. In 5 months though everything will turn around. "when I dress myself in the olympic collection at home it just hits me again" smiles Tomas.
Now it's september. Do you think about the upcoming olympics?
When I am training, I see those 5 rings blinking in my head. But it's not that I am just preparing myself "only" for the olympics.
Is the preperation any dfferent for a year that happens only once every 4 years?
Not a lot changed. Just the beginning of the season. Normally I started to compete already in september, now I won't start untill middle october.
When does the olympic fever start for you?
I guess when I have the entire olympic collection at home. In front of the mirror I already put everything on, and on that moment it just hit me again *smile*
Did they already take your measurements for the collection?
Not yet, but I think they will make everything for me without me.
And then what if it doesn't fit?
The firm working together with the olympic commitee is also a sponsor of mine and they already made a lot of things for me. They know me.
So you won't have a tshirt that is too short?
When that should happen, I will just go to the Alpine pro shop and just change it.
Season starts in October, what is your first competition?
TEB
And then you will already be in your best form?
I looked at the starting list and I thuoght it'd be better to be well prepared *smile* To just try something with this field would not be a smart idea.
In your LP you would like 2 quads, how are they doing?
Now it's going well, suspiciously good...
Is that a bad sign?
at some point a time will come when you just jump by itself, then it's not so forced. That's just my subjective feeling. I started to include the quad quite early in my trainings this year, but I wanted it like this.
to try?
*nodds head* At this point it's going OK, I am content. I have quads in both programs, just now proffessionals wonder if it would pay off or not
And do you think it will work out?
I think it will.
Will you jump other quads in the LP?
At this moment it looks like I won't. The toeloop is going well for me, I don't want to experiment.
Did you change anything in your preperation now before the olympic season.
Actually I travelled less. I prepared myself in training. but my off ice training started for example already in April.
You did already go to the other side of the Ocean. Didn't you go to Vancouver to have a look?
This time no. I was there about 2 years ago. I flew towards a small town Victorie, but it was just a 5 min flight over the bay. I heard however, that Vancouver should be prepared, the centre has been build. I am looking forward to it.
When will you fly towards the olympics?
For this I have about 2 or 3 variants. I can go to Canada a few weeks before to start training there or I can go there 5 days before and take it like any other competion. Third option is to ask Petr Novak (trainer Martina Sablikova) he understands these kind of things very well. I will ask them what their plans are.
So you won't go to the opening of the olympics?
For me it doesn't have priority, it's the competition itself.
Fly in, compete and take a medal home?
That would the best feeling, but I would also like to stay a little longer. It will depends on the overall feeling there and how nce the olympic village will be. Just with the accrediation it's a little difficult. I would like to stay and support the others.
Like who?
For example the first real hockeymatch I saw was at olys. that was nice.
So you would go there?
Sure, I didn't see the draw yet though. But I'd also love to go and see Martina, how she beats everyone.
Are you and martina prepared for the pressure that comes with a medal?
No, that I leave for Martina, I will just take one like that *smiles*
Really?
It will depend on the rest of the season, how the GP and euros go.
What would be better for you, to have good results or be in the background?
I thought many times, that the guys who make it to the GPF, are the ones that fight for the medals at worlds. But Evan lysacek showed that it doesn't have to be like this. the first 2 grand prixs he skated like a pig, but at worlds he managed it all and won. Everyone has good results, it would be good if I could set some nice highest score XY, which holds up all season.
and the xy score at olympics will be what?
It should be around 230 or 240 points. I will have to hit the highest note and be at my best at the olympics.
Stephane Lambiel and Evgeni Plushenko will return to the sport. Won't you have a lot of concurrence?
I was actually joking that if Ulrich Salchow won't return. Or that I would get an email from Petr Barna or Josef Sabovcik, he also still jumps. I don't know why the people do this, but my training doesn't change because of it. When they return to the start, then we will see if they sport stayed like when they left or if things shifted.
You won't come back once you left?
I cannot say because for me this situation did not occur yet. But when I say no, then it should stay like this. Something different is for example pregnancy at girls, but to return... for me it's like going a step back, which is not logical for me. I guess there is sometihng magic there which a person is missing. It's not about fame or money, but abuot the adrenaline a sport gives. For example hockeygoaly Dominik Hasek. For his it was the teamspirit, which you don't find on the street.
Do you believe that Plushenko really returns?
I think not. Untill now he kept holding off really starting. I saw his programs from the tests. Allthough he beat everyone easily, it wasn't very convincing. But I am not in the position to critisize the olympic champion. Jumpwise he will be good, we will see what he will have to present.
Can the judges hold him up?
We are still in figure skating. 2 big names in our sport return. They may return, but whatever they do or what they want, it doesn't really interest me who with what comes. I am going my own way and want to prove myself.
