At the end of this week czech figure skating Tomas Verner awaits a spicy start of the season. The european champion of 2008 and the 4th place finisher at 2009 worlds awaits the grand prix trophee eric bompard in Paris. At this competition he will show his 2 new programs for the first time.
"To tell you the truth, I don't really know what I should expect and what the judges will say about my programs. I have the feeling that we did a very good job and I wanna know their verdict. We will see if I am going in the right direction. There is enough time though untill the olympics, so there will be plenty of opportunities to work on them, so that they will be perfekt. Tomas said in an interview to CTK.
In the past - with one exception when he started out with an olympic qualification competition - he never started the season with such an important competition. "that was actually one of my better competitions, I was prepared early in the season. Afterwards I started to take my first competition more like some kind of test and perhaps that wasn't a good way to start a season. I knew I'd start the competition not fully prepared to compete against the other guys, who go to these very sharp. This won't be the case this year, I am prepared here." said the 23yr old figure skater.
Verner is one of the olympic medal hopes for the games in Vancouver. Also because of that the fans will follow him closely from the beginning of the season on. Tomas himself also feels that. "people already asked wether or not I will present myself as a candidate for the olympic gold in Paris. I wouldn't say that, though of course with every program I want to speak to and captivate the audience. But paris is not about the olympics and well we saw it from Lysacek last season. He wasn't very good all season untill the end when he grabbed himself together and won the world championships." He notes about his american fellow competitor who surprisingly won worlds.
That doesn't mean though that Tomas Verner doesn't want to have success on friday and saturday in Paris. "Paris is a grand prix and it's a chance to level and measure yourself between the other top figure skaters. But I'm not so tied up about it yet, the pressure will come for real in December."Says the pupil of Michael Huth and Vlasta Koprivova who trains mostly in Oberstdorf.
The czech number one will have a new short and a new free program this season. Both of them are movie themed: Godfather and Zorba the Greek. Before the Czech figure skater usually just had one new program. Tomas knows very well that to have 2 new programs is a risk, but decided that this year it will pay off.
"It's important for my skating ego. That I am able to present 2 new programs and be a little bit different on the ice than I was last year. When I'd just adjust one of the old programs, it would still be something the judges already saw. I will stand out a little from the rest. He said. Added to that Tomas also very well knows that against him will compete 3 "new" top competitors next year, who did not compete last year: Takahashi, Lambiel and Plushenko,
The ideal preperation this summer also adds up to his optimism. He did not have any injuryproblems and he trained according to plan. "I trained just like I planned it, I didn't do that much off ice training, last year I was very tired of that afterwards. I practiced on the ice and basically in the second part of august I started to train my programs fully like in competition." Tomas said.
This year he decided to change a bit in his model of preperation, and started to do complete runthroughs of his programs. "In the beginning I'd feel it. It takes a lot of energy to do a program like in competition, because they are very difficult. It's not easy to prepare yourself mentally that every day will be competition day. But after a while it was just another training process"
The skater of the figure skating club in ceske budejovice spent a few days in Canada in September to work with choreographer Lori Nichol, who built both his programs. "when we made the programs in June, there were no jumps or spins there yet, I added them over the summer. She had to control if it did not become just a program with just jumps. " Tomas enlights.
A Czech judge Olga Zakova also helped him with some advice about his programs. "She said she was missing some character. she gave me some notes which I passed on to Lori. I started to jump in the program so it took away some of the intensity of the program. We figure skaters always focus a little more on the jumps. But I feel this is a normal proces." said Verner
A nice addition to the preperation in the summer was the gala in South-Korea. "I couldn't say no when they invited me. I appeared on the ice with Plushenko, Yagudin, Lysacek, Buttle. They are all Olympic and world champions from the last couple of years, it was like a group of elite skaters, I didn't wanna be missing." Said Verner, who believes that one day he will also end up in the group of winners of a big championship...
