"It's time to try something new" he said to himself. The olympic season wasn't exactly succesfull for Tomas and that prompted him to some radical changes. The European Champion of 2008 decided to atleast temporarily cancel the cooperation with trainers Vlasta Koprivova and Michael Huth.
Instead of going to Oberstdorf to prepare himself for the upcoming season, Tomas decided to have a look overseas.
"I decided, that I want to try out the system of training they use overseas. I don't know if this will be good or bad for me, that's why I first want to try it. I will go to a couple of places and try it out" said Verner
The main difference will be that he won't have a trainer all to himself. Untill now he always had 100% attention from the trainer.
"Canadian/American attitude is that there is a trainer, but just supervise and make appropriate cofrrection when they see a problem. For the rest the girls and the boys just skate and focus by themselves." said the 23 year old figure skater about the difference between Europe and the USA.
His trainers Mrs. Koprivova and Mr. Huth are at peace with his decision. "They understand me and we didn't part in a bad way. With Mrs Koprivova I anyway still work together. I will be on ice with her in May and June and then I will fly away" said Tomas.
However he does not know yet if he will stay there or return to his trainers here in Europe.
"I don't know if I will like it overseas or not. When I will like it there, I will stay there. If not, I will come back here and train with my old team. " said Tomas
He will come back from training in the US and Canada at the beginning of september. The exact program now is that he will try out in Toronto, New Jersey and Detroit.
"I will be at every location for about a week or 10 days. I want to try out everything, so I can see even off the ice, how everything works." said Verner, who at one point even train with legendary coach Brian Orser, coach of Olympic gold medalist Yu-na Kim.
Verner also decided to work on the psychological aspect, which failed him already a couple of times.
"I am taking more extreme steps than I ever did. I didn't wanna tell everyone about it though untill now. I started to work with a person now who doesn't really have the classical approach to this problem" said Tomas.
The new method will involve training, not sitting, or so he heard. "We will see what it will bring me. I still have a month and a half and I have really high expectations of this" Said Tomas. His new psychologist otherwise devotes his time to boxers and wrestlers.
In summer tomas will work on his new programs. "I want to enter the new season with a new SP and LP. I don't want to keep anything for last season and it will be like a whole new beginning." said Tomas.
Thanks, Dee Good decision for him to try something new. I'm really glad to hear that he is trying to change something. Will it work or not anyway it will bring some new experience and emotions. Wishing Good Luck!

It says in the article that he will train with Mr Koprivova in may and june and then goes away, so my guess is, that it means he won't be at that gala... but I'm not 100% sure... I tried to ask him but so far he didn't reply so hm
"I am looking for a new impuls, a new beginning" said the figure skater at a get together with journalists. "After this unfortunate season I realized I need a change. I decided, that I want to try out something different. I will leave the training group in Oberstdorf and in the summer I will train overseas" says the 23 year old figure skater.
"I talked it over with my trainers and they understood my decision. With Mrs Koprivova I will anyway continue to work. Now during the month of may and june I will train with her, untill I will go away." said the european champion of 2008. "In the summer in the USA I will take part in several camps and I want to try out and see how they train there. After that I will decide what I will do in the future. If I will return or if I will stay there. In anyway I want to prepare myself for the next season in a different way than the last" Tomas added
At these training centres overseas Tomas will meet also other top figure skaters. "At one of these trainingcamps should be Jeremy Abbott and at another one the world champion Daisuke Takahashi" Said Tomas, who should also be training with famous coach Brian Orser, who coached Yu-na Kim to olympic gold.
"With Brian we are now looking when we will get together" And how is the training overseas any different from here? "Here the coach is focused on one skater for a few hours a day. There you rather train in a group and you have to do more yourself. The coach will not tell you what to do so much and he will only interfere when he sees a problem. It's like before a competition. But just like I said, I don't know if this method will work for me, but I do want to try it" said Tomas
After the unfortunate season Tomas decided to work on the psychological side as well. "I am still sorry for what happened in the olympic season. You cannot just get over that, but I also know that there is also nothing I can do about it now. Thanks to all the new plans I have I am slowly getting over my depression. On top of that I was contacted by a person after the olympics who will help me with the psychological side of things. He promised he will help me to get over these on going bad results. I have very high expectations" Tomas enclosed.
Change is good, good, good... and at least he is giving it a chance. I think if North American coaches are more hands off, it could be good for him... instead of relying on coaches he can find more motivation within himself. It would probably be difficult the first few weeks.
Lots of great coaches and skaters in those cities... I just hope he doesn't go to Galina Z in NJ (she is scary). Otherwise someone like Orser or Sato would be great (not sure how willing they would be, as Orser trains Rippon and Sato trains Abbott).
Are there other elite coaches in these cities that he'd possibly be trying with?
I am also glad that Tomas tries something new!It has been needed for some time now,not only this season.Good he is working with a mental coach too.Tomas is a great skater and when he is on, he can beat them all.hope he will back fully inspired. /Maria
