According to what I read is Yuna Kim the one who's representing Figure Skating as a Role Model at Innsbruck 2012. And It totally makes sense cause she was fantastic at Vancouver 2010 www.olympic.org/figure-skating-individual-womenAn excellent role model for young athletes out there.

Thank you, Reut, for the link. I was about to translate the article from "pirouette", was on the second last chapter of this interesting interview .... when I suddenly had an interruption in the internet ... and everything was gone!!! . Before starting again I have to digest this first . And maybe somebody else wants to translate, who also speaks a better english than me. If not, I try again, but only tomorrow evening. In any case I just want to mention the small part which made me really happy: Stephane mentions the actual programs of his repertoire and says at the end: These are my new programs, but I have many, many more programs to come (...). HOW I like to hear this!!!

Actually, it's not even in advance, as you had already done most of it . I truly feel for you - I know that feeling when you've done a large part of the work, and then suddenly you loose it all . That's the problem with computers - you have to be very careful with them, and save everything as often as possible, even if it slows the process down considerably.

So I started again, (thanks for the enouragement, Lauravvv). I write in two parts this time, to - in case problems arise again- loose only half of it.
Stephane Lambiel: "One must skate with his heart".
Pirouette: Why have you been in Oberstdorf for the Nebelhorn-Trophy?
Stephane: I had come already two days before the competition, to work with Carolina (Kostner). It was for the show in the opera arena of Verona and I had been engaged to rehearse two programs with her. I have the luck to start my career as a choreographer with talented people who have so many skills. I really can draw on big ressources. This summer I had the opportunity to work with skaters of different levels, with skaters from Japan, Russia, Italy, from everywhere. I have understood that I love this work and in the next years I see myself more and more as choreographer; I want to work with the skaters on the body-expression, on the musicality, so that a program gets to have personality. For this I do not really need to work with champions, I generally like to work with people who share with me the same passion for figure skating, who want to learn, who want to develope other qualities than just jumps, jumps, jumps. Yes, the technique is important, but I think that in figure skating there is also something more, and one should work on that. And when this gets reinforced, one can see that figure skating is more than just the alignment of elements. One should not skate for the scores, but with the heart. The most important are the emotions, I think. The emotions which remain after a skater finishes his program are decisive wheter it will be remembered or not. There are skaters from whom you may remember a jump which they stood well, but you do not remember the program or emotions. I want to work in this direction, for the younger skaters who start now, who are now on their way up.
How you elaborate a choreography?
The music is the base. There has never been figure skating without music. The base of my choreography is to discover the music, to feel what story and which emotions it contains. Of course I have to take into consideration the arrangement of the elements within. Often it's the coaches who arrange the elements and who tell me where has to be what. With Tatsuki (Machida) it was not so difficult because I knew his programs well. I gave much into his program and was very sad, that he could not skate it at the Nebelhorn-Trophy. He had understood very well what I wanted to transmit to him. I had a lot of pleasure to work with him, and this work remains among my best moments of this summer.
You also worked with the group of Alexei mishin
I have been very honoured that Mr. Mishin had engaged me. It was a big chance for me as choreographer to be able to work with such talented pupils. He has lots of pupils who already master lots of tripples, who have strong characters, who have the determination and will to grow further upward. I have worked mainly with with Artur (Gachinski), Lisa (Tuktamisheva), and a bit with Evgeni (Plushenko). Gradually I also worked with the younger ones to show them some movements, how to use the body tridimentionally. I suppose they appreciated this, me in any case I appreciated it a lot.
What impression you had of the pupils?
I was very impressed by Artur. Since the world championships he has made enormous progresses. One can see a much better quality of movement in comparition with former years. I guess he had taken many dancing lessions, and had let himself be inspired by many things and persons. I was very proud that I also could give him something from myself and to maybe have influenced him in a way. Mainly I worked on his FS with him. We added transitions/ (junctions?) and I looked closely at his step sequences, the circular- step and the choreography-step (?). At the end something very strong resulted out of it. Evgeni came back from his injury. He had a longer pause, to recover from his knee surgery. He first started slowly, and I showed him a few things which he, I think, has used for his program. He was very interested in learning new things.
How was it then, to work with a former rival?
It was not different than to work with other skaters, in the sense that he also had the will und demand to learn. When we worked together I did not see the former rival, but a friend, who wanted some help. I did not make a choreography for him, but I gave him informations and I hope that he later will use them in his programs. If somebody needs my help, I help with pleasure.

2nd part
So, every skater can call you now?
I don't know if all the skaters have my phone-number (laughs). I like to do this, but the days unfortunately have only 24 hours and I cannot be there for everybody. But it is a big pleasure for me to do this work and I hope to be able to commit myself to it entirely later.
Do you immediately have a program in your mind when you hear music?
Don Quixote for Tatsuki Machida was a music wich I always wanted to use for myself. To me, Don Quixote is a very dynamic music, a very fresh, young music. I believe that unfortunately for me the time is over for this and that I cannot skate to it anymore. When I discussed with Tatsuki over this music I thought that he could become a very good Don Quixote, young, with a very pure spirit. I cut the music with a friend. The slow part is a very known piece, the other parts are not of the most known from Don Quixote, but in my opinion they fit best the style of Tatsuki. Within the choreography-step there is a part in which I saw in my mind how Don Quixote for the first time discovers love. In the beginning he is very playful, a boy, who wants to have fun in his life; then he finds a girl he wants to seduce. There is the part when he falls in love and in the choreography-step the scene when he holds the girl in his arms and dances with her. This, I think, is my favourite part. At the end the music becomes enthusiastic and he heralds in the whole village: "I have found the woman of my life. I am so happy!". When I heard the music, I imagined all this. I believe it was good for him to have these pictures in his mind to understand what this movements wanted to say. This all is not very complicated or subtil, but it is clear and with that you can transmit the message to the audiance.
Fortunately you also still skate yourself
Yes, fortunately for me, because I love it and I need it. After the shows in october I will have a longer skating pause. I will continue to rehearse, but I will integrate a (acting) show in the french part of Switzerland. There will be several comedians, among them one who is called Yann Lambiel, so like me. We come from the same village, but from different families. He imitates politicians, sportsmen and other celebrities, and also me. He often made fun of me and it had for long been our dream to do a show together. In december we will make a revue with actual scetches and a dozen artists in our home-village Saxon. I will sing, be a comedian and we will disguise. It will be an interesting experience for me as I have never been on a stage and have never done something without skates. They are very funny people and I will learn a lot.
What programs you prepared for your skating-skows?
This summer, I for the first time showed a program to the violin concerto from Tchajkowsky in Japan. For the show in Verona I prepared a new program to music from Rigoletto. Besides I have a prelude from Rachmaninov and a new program, which I for the first time presented in Korea, "Please don't stop the music", sung by Jamie Cullum. This is very jazzy and very different from what I have done before, a bit sexy, a bit macho. Those are my new programs, but I still have many, many more programs to come. At Art on Ice in february I will surely show two new programs. I would like to renew my repertory. There is still so much music I like, there are so many things which I want to skate. One idea I have already given up to Tatsuki, but there are still many more which I want to keep for myself. Anyway I still have enough also for other skaters.
Do you now do your programs by yourself or are you still working together with Salome Brunner?
I continue working with Salome, because we have developed a very good system together. We often combine our choreography-lessons with ballet-lessons; I think that I would not have to power to go to the ballet by myself as I am so bad in it. But she gives me company and tries to encourage me. We combine ballet- and jazzlessons. We will go to watch dance- and musicshows and afterwards work on our choreography. We try to get inspiration from many sides. She is really like a muse for me and gives me the guideline for my programs. She helps me a lot and I still can learn so much from her. She has inexhaustible ressources.
What does it look like, do you come for the Olympia-qualification to Oberstdorf in 2013?
To skate here? Honestly, I can say no already now. No, I really have concluded with this. I am very happy with what I have achieved. I think there is a time for everything and for everyone, and my time is over. This is a bit sad, but on the other hand there are still so many things in life and I am very happy with what I do and to continue with the shows. If I had continued to compete I would have felt the need so strongly to have to show something that it probabely would have turned me off. But this way I still have this immense joy in skating.

Thank you so much, mejokuste, for the translation of that interesting interview. I like how Stephane always talks about putting your heart and passion into skating. That's what it's all about, really, loving what you do. And it makes me feel better that Stephane also hates to go to classes sometimes... And I'm also interested to see what Stephane did for Plushenko. Plushenko is a great skater, but I always thought there was so much more he could do on expression and choreography.

I'm sure there'll be more than one ARM at these Olympics, but St�phane will definitely be in Innsbruck FYI, Yuna is one of three Youth Olympic Games "Ambassador", along with American skiier Lindsey Vonn and Austrian skiier Benni Raich. Stephane is indeed an "Athlete Role Model", along with 14 other well-known athletes in all of the disciplines participating in the Youth Olympics, and 15 people from the IOC Athletes Commission. I'm not sure what the difference is exactly with the Ambassador and Role Model. But Yuna and Stephane are the only figure skaters involved so far. The good news is that both Yuna and Stephane are excellent role models for young athletes and both will definitely be involved in the Games!
