As a minority French speakers in the skating world, Brian just older than Stephane one year, and have built their friendship since teenage. Today they will bring us laughter and memories in this interview!
Stephane and Brian, two of the most famous skaters in the French-speaking area, the former is the 2005 and 2006 world champion; the other is the 2007 world champion. They have unique personalities and have built many brilliant records, also named as the most sensational skater since 2000. Today, these two old friends will be interviewed to us for the first time, and show their frankness and life.
1. They build up their friendship since teenage
─You both speak French, sorry for asking you to speak English in this interview.
S:It’s Ok, we can speak English.
─Do you remember how it felt when you first met?
S:I remember when I first met Brian I was very happy. Because there is few swiss skaters in Figure Skating and most of them speak German, only I speak French, so there are no people can talk. Although I can talk with the French team, but for me, I was so happy that there is finally a French-speaking guy.
B:Me too, and when I was 16 or 17 years old after my first competition in European Figure Skating Championships, I was confused for a while, then I talked a lot with Stephane, and he helped me to bring back my confidence. Our first met ... seems to be in Oberstdorf?
S:Yes, the World Junior Figure Skating Championships in Oberstdorf.
B:We are 15 years old?
S:14 or 15 years old, maybe。
─In adolescence, you meet a partner who can talk.
S:Yes. A teenager still needs a companion who can play with in a changing room, so that we built a strong friendship.
─At that time, were there some interesting things happen?
S&B:(Speak in French in a low voice)
─We will ask the French translator to help us to translate your whisper!
S&B:Please don’t! (Laugh)
S:Once I participated in a tour which held by French Ice Association in France. It happened to be my 18th birthday during the tour. In most European countries, 18 years old is an adult, so at that time, I had the experience of becoming an adult in various meaning. (Laugh)
B:And I witnessed them all.
─So what happened, shouldn't we continue to ask?
S:No. (Laugh)
2. The secret of being a Skater over a long period of time
─You two are completely different types of skater, which part do you admire each other?
B:I think Stephane is unique! His spin, step, skating skill, jump… are amazing. As he grows older, his skill is getting better. I think he can go back to be an active skater, Even if I knew he wouldn’t. For me, But Stephane is like an irreplaceable role model.
S:You too, Brian is a tough person, not only just physical, but also in health and mental. The thing I admire the most is that during his active time, he always put his body and mind into it, even there are lots of pain, and he also maintain a strong willpower. I admire him from the bottom of my heart for his strong body and soul, which maintain a long period of time. He is an example for all skaters.
─Which program of him do you like?
B:Flamenco。I like 「Poeta」。
S:「007」James Bond。Brian also performed in my show, he is totally James Bond. I really like this program.
─Although you are different types of skaters, but you both were active skaters for a long time, and also keep attending the show invitations after retire.
B:I am glad even if only just daily practice on ice. I feel “real” and “happy”. The most important thing is to make yourself happy, isn’t it? So that's the reason why I've been skating.
S:For me, it may be from the surrounding. My coaching team, family and friends not only gave me confidence, but also supported me as a solid pillar. Sometimes I would like to do some silly things (laughs), but they always stop me, and make me focus on the right things. Like recently, I would like to change my team name into "Company", they help me operating ice show and school together, so I can keep skating without worries.
─Stephane,On your own show, Brian has participated twice. As a professional skater, what do you think the charm of Brian?
S:He is very attractive. He is handsome after all (laughs), just kidding. He is a glamorous skater, so he has so many fans. Brian's gestures, skating on the ice, or even just a smile, he is just like a gentleman all the time. As far as show producers concerned, Brain is absolutely the one they need. Brian loves skating and performing, and he works hard to bring joy to the audience. For the organizer, the most important thing is to create a good time to share with the audience, so he really is a very attractive skater.
3. An unforgettable experience in that era
─There was a period of time that you two were in a competing relationship, after retired, any changes in your friendship or relationship?
B:Not exactly, we were already good friends before we met in the high-level competition. The big contest like World Championships or European Championships, which we had to be very focus on, we never forget to be respectful to each other. That’s very important. We represented our own country in the competition, and it made the competition fierce, but now when I look back, that was a very beautiful period of time.
S:Indeed. We are the skaters of the same era, although we are already good friends at the beginning, we still are competitor after all, the tensions between us are inevitable, but for figure skating, it doesn’t matter who is opponent. Everyone practice so hard, but sometimes we still have to accept that other people are better than ourselves. Instead of saying that we are competitor, I would say that we all fight for our own sake, in order to become a better skater. I have never thought to defeat Brina, all I have is the respect for him. Probably because of it, even if the competition is fierce, it won’t damage our friendship. Now we skatig together in a lot of shows, including in Europe, and that makes me happy.
─As the skaters of the same era, you two must have some common experience at that time. Can you tell us about what’s the most impressive thing?
S:Salt Lake City? Winter Olympics of 2002。
B:Oh, indeed.
S: Yagudin and Plushenhenko in the changing room, that tense atmosphere, do you remember that?
B:(Frown)
S:For me, that is an unforgettable scene. I can smell gunpowder in the air. We were too young, and don’t know what can we do. I didn’t expect four years later, we went through the same situation.
B:We don’t need to worry about getting or losing in Salt Lake City after all.
S:And Emanuel Sandhu abstained, that impressed me. We just participated in the competition in Salt Lake City and saw the whole thing.
4. Which costume of him would you like to try?
─What kind of Jump do you like?
S:Flip and toe loop.
─How about “Axel”?
S:Uh... (Laughs)Oh, now I'm not that bad like the active-duty period. Because of injury, I hadn’t practiced for several years, but after the left foot and the whole body training, I found a solution. See, as long as you are willing to spend time on practical practice, there is nothing can’t be solved, even my 3A (Laughs).
B:I don’t like 3A either, but the success rate is good in active-duty period. Because I know how to make it succeed, as long as you keep the center of gravity on the right side of your body, but each person has different situation, it can’t be generalized. The skaters not only 3A, but also quadruple jump is very easy for them. That’s awesome.
─If you can choose a program from him to perform, including wearing his costume, which one would you pick?
B:Oh!I skating a program of Stephane?
─Yes
B:Choose one?
─Yes。
B&S:(They discussed in French again)
S:Can we pass this question?
─No (Laughs)
B:Flamenco. Or "Cirque du Soleil"
S:For me, maybe "Matrix", I want to experience the feeling when Brina performs "Matrix".
─In "Fantasy on ice", you both cooperate with the special guests.
B:I am really glad to be able to participate in FaOI. I need to do the choreography by myself in this collaboration, so I put the song in my ipod. I start listening after I wake up every morning. I hope to find the combination of point between figure skating and music, although the song a little bit longer.
S: I can help you with the choreography. We have the same practice time, so we can figure it out together.
─Stephane will cooperate with pianists in Kobe and Nagano, right?
S:Reval's "La valse" is the program which made by Carolina (Kostner) and me for the "Ice legends". This time I am very happy to perform this song while Kotaro is playing it. In Geneva, the pianist is Khatia (Buniatishvili), she and Kotaro interpret the song in different ways, and Carolina is not in FaOI, I must re-interpretation of these two differences, so I perform this song and imagine Carolina is here. Kotaro helps me a lot with it, so I believe that we will present a great performance.
─When will you perform together next time?
B:”Kings on ice” in October!
S:Perhaps we are going to perform together in Japan next summer again.
We are very looking forward to it and thank you for this interview.
