Why, why I'm not their Scottish fan... This is such an amazing invitation. Really. Emmm... May I dare to propose to beat this record next year?

Thanks John and Sinead for the update! Will some lucky fan please go to their practices in Scotland and give us an update on both John and Sinead and Penny and Nick?! (I really like both couples!). I can't wait for Euros and wish both couples lots of luck! Reut - I agree - surely they can't just equal Torvill and Dean, they definitely have to exceed Torvill and Dean and win at least one more British title!

I wish I was in Scotland now! I'd love the chance to meet them, or at least see them skate live. Hopefully I'll get my chance at Sheffield 2012

I went in to see them today.... I never know what to say here - how much do I say and what are you interested in? lol I've not seen them in the flesh for a while and they still look the same. Not aged a bit. There must be something in the ice cold temperatures preserving you. Sinead has a bit of a sore throat. Hope that's cleared up soon. Plenty of fluids and early nights! Evgeni was on the ice, skateless, looking cool, but warm in a parka (coat). The gentleman he always is, smiled to me in acknowledgement. My boogie partner once or twice, Dr Kerr, kept me company with his information-packed banter. We had a good old natter about who'd be at Euros, about the Brits, and skaters competing against S&J. Penny and Nick were also there. Poor Penny's luggage went AWOL at the airport so she didn't have her skates. She had to borrow a pair of free skates (and blades) a size too big, so she was kind of limited in what she could do. She is tiny. Or maybe Nick has grown. The SIS Scottish Institute people were there; S&J's physio, Sue and their video analysist, Andy (he probably does more than that) Pics on the SIS site: www.sisport.com/sisport/21.htmlA journalist from the Sunday Times newspaper came, so he stood with me while S&J ran through parts of their FD. He'd never skated before, he told me, and usually covered football for the paper. He'd never been to Murrayfield before either and was blown over by its modern look. I jest. He was quite impressed with the handstand lift. He said "You'd need an awful lot of trust in a person to do that!" Anyway, it's well seen that the rink management were impressed with the clientele cos they put more lights on. A rare treat. Anyway, we'll need to keep a look out for that article - not sure if it's this Sunday or when. www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/newspapers/sunday_times/?days=SundayJohn mentioned his PSOTY title. The fact that at last he'd won after being 2nd once or twice at some point. I vaguely remember he came close a few years ago. He wasn't altogether convinced it was the solely the kilt because he's not worn kilt for ages, but then there are plenty photos to remind people aren't there! I really didn't speak to them much really - plenty busy - I'm just glad I got to see them before they go off to war, so to speak. And it's always good to get a blether with the Doctor.

Sinead and John thanks for the update and Mel thanks for your update!! Glad to hear things are going well and I wish them the best best best of luck!! I'd love to see their programs later in the season sometime. I've been lucky enough to watch them practice during the summer and would like to see the progress firsthand--they're so much stronger now!!

Thanks for the update Mel! I hope their training in Scotland has been going well. I feel sorry for Penny having her luggage going AWOL! I hope she has managed to get her own skates back! Can I ask you Mel, how did you actually come to know John and Sinead? Are you a friend of the family? (I've been wondering for a while now!)

Lilya, I "skated" at Murrayfield between 1978-1980, had a 20 year rest, and went back 10 years ago where I saw Sinead & John teaching. My first impression of John was that he was Canadian, because of his accent. He was also wearing a jacket which had a Canadian flag on it. I had no idea they were related or that they skated together. This was their 1st season skating together so it would've been after their 1st nationals together, 2000/01? Anyway I asked Sinead, because I felt better with a girl, if she could give me lessons. She may have thought "oh god, why me?" but teach me she did! ;D I have a feeling John would have been more lenient. I had a bit of fear due to not skating for 20 years, but wanted to pass the "prelim" equivalent test that I didn't do as a child. Sinead made me try axels, which I fell on loads, but eventually managed a passable one in front of everyone which is a memory I'll always have (unless I get Alzheimer's). Wheeee. So that's how we met. A couple of years after that, I asked if we (me and AS) could take over their website (from Stu and Jill who'd designed the original and kept it going until then) with me editing it and S&J having a message board here.
When they're home in Scotland, they live quite near so I try and stalk them or force them to visit us whenever possible. My youngest daughter adores them even though she has no great interest in skating - she's not in the least bit impressed with a bronze medal at Euros, (although she did get to wear it!) but loves them for the sweet people they are to her. Both S&J will make great parents one day and they've got fantastic role models in their parents. Lucky people.

That's a great story Mel - certainly one to tell the grandchildren in many many years to come!! I'm sure you have now made a lot of people jealous with your tale of how you met John and Sinead! Although if I had to choose who to be taught by, I'm not sure whether I would choose John or Sinead..!
