So many ice skating rinks are being closed one after another in Europe or devoted to popular and profitable ice hockey, whereas pharaonic budgets are spent for ball sports. Politicians definitely want to ignore that figure skating is sport and passion altogether. Now it is our turn and my sons (6 and 11, both Belgian and absolute fans of Kevin) have been deprived of their passion. Some support from the ice skating community would be welcome on our online petition 9390.lapetition.be/ (now in French and Dutch, will be in English from March 19)

Signed Marilie (and welcome to the mb!). Is this the closure of the ice rink where they kept nationals in 2009? We did note it was in a real bad state, wouldn't it need renovation? I thought they already had a new one in Luik? Once you added an english version, we can post this in basic skating, where more ppl see it. I will then pass it on to my friends as well!

Thank you for your prompt reply and support.
Yes, I mean the facilities you saw in 2009. They obviously needed maintenance, but the City totally neglected the site, hoping that it would last until the opening of the new rink.
Snowfalls this winter gave the final assault and we had to leave the rink for safety reasons. It will not be repaired because of the presence of asbest in the roof and because the City is eager to reaffect the site : they actually needed it to apply for the world exhibition in 2017!
Since the building of the new ice rink (Médiacité) has been postponed for years, it was a providential way to get rid of us.
We are now deprived of ice for at least two seasons and left without any support. Some hockey teams and figure skaters manage to train on ice rinks (60 to 85 km from home at unacceptable times, especially for children, at their own costs), but there is not enough space for everyone, since 2 other ice rinks have closed in the last decade.
3000 recreational skaters are also left without sport and leisure.
We fear that there will be no place for true sport in the new private facilities, included in a commercial project aiming at profitability and with no concern for our unprofitable training times. (A couple of years ago we fought against the project of placing a tropical bar in the middle of the ice!)
To cut a long story short, we are afraid of having no future in the pharaonic achievements of our city...
Thanks for your attention. The petition is now online in English.
