I'm still for Stéphane but will probably not be able to post more frequently here as in the past, if my circumstances will stay in the same way as during the last months . --------------------------------------------- As we know Stephane visited a SOS-Children Village in Daeng and todays "Coopzeitung - # 38/20.September 2011" there is a nice article about this trip: www.coopzeitung.ch/lambiel#tab_1Most of the pics are already posted of Stephane's official FB-page, however not the article itself.

I tried to translate this - in my opinion very nice - article about Stéphanes visit to the SOS childrens village. There are for sure many faults because english is not my mothertongue, but hopefully it is understandable anyway. I am not really sure weather it is ok to post a translation or not (copyright etc) but I think there should be no problem? So, here we go:
January 25. 2005. She was born this day. Yu-Min does not know more about where she comes from and will never know. Her mother abandoned her to her destiny. She brought the new born baby to a "babywindow" (a place, where a baby anonymously can be placed at an institution, wich then will care for the child). Yu-Min got her name at the SOS-childrens village in the southkorean town of Daegu, where she finnally found her home. "She was 100 days old when she arrived here", says Chun-Ja Yang, called Fabiola, her childrens-village mother. Yu-Min lives together with Fabiola and six "brothers and sisters" - all coming from difficult conditions - in a small house near the administrationplace of the village. The "village is an emsemble of friendly brick houses surrounded by lawns in the agglomeration of the million-town of Daegu.
Today is a special day in the SOS-childrens-village. The Swiss figure skater Stéphane Lambiel comes for a visit. Yu-Min and her younger sister Mo-Rin wear their colourful, traditional korean "Hanbok"-costumes (see title photo) and give flowers to their swiss guests. All the seven children of mother Fabiola are radiant because they don't see the famous figure skater for the first time.
The day before they had visited Seoul thanks to his invitation and have seen him and the most famous Southkorean, Olympic champion Yuna Kim, performing on the ice. "All that Skate" is the name of the southkorean pendant to the swiss figureskating gala "Art on Ice". This show also mixes performances of the worlds best figure skaters with fantastic video- and lightshows (only live-music is missing). Stéphane Lambiel, the x-time swiss and two times world champion, is one of the most asked for artists in South Korea. And ice shows are very popular in South Korea. Each year there are several ice spectacles of several days, which are always sold out. Even more than in Switzerland the shows in Seoul are magnets for families with many children and for very young people. Ever since Yuna Kim won the gold medal in Vancouver 2010, there is boundless enthusiasm. In "All that Skate" the 21 years old Yuna Kim stands uncontestedly in the center, but there is much support and applause also for the other ice artists, among others for Sarah Meier. "Nowhere else there is such an enthusiastic audiance like in Seoul", says Stéphane Lambiel during the walk through the town. "C'est fou!". (It's crazy).
And indeed: Already at the first song "Fame, what a feeling" every each figure skater is welcomed with so much shouting and screaming that ones ears are trembling. "It is like at a concert of Madonna", says Lambiel and the comparition with a pop concert fits to a 100 percent. Figure skaters are topstars here. Every second southkorean girl dreams of being an ice princess and a second Yuna Kim - the way like here (in Switzerland) young girls are dreaming of a career as a model. But Stéphane Lambiel would not want to change places with Yuna Kim: around the clock she is accompanied by bodyguards.
Also the swiss iceprince is fairly protected bythe korean organizers of "All that Skate", especially by the english speaking Anny Kim. She objects to our insisting wish of taking pictures from Stéphane and the family from the childrens village from Daegu at the huge Yuna-Kim poster in front of the main entrance of the stadium. "You cannot imagine the tumult that would occure when the fans would recognize Stéphane", Anny says and guides us to the more quiet vip entrance. There, some of the accidentally present visitors indeed ask Stéphane Lambiel immediately and enthusiastically for autographs.
Fabiola and the seven children from Daegu look astonished, but quickly loose their timidity. Stéphane manages with a few gestures to break the ice. "The beautiful thing is that one does not need to speak the language to be able to communicate with children", he says later on. The nin years old Won-Jin is the most couragious of the group, he takes Stéphanes hand and almost does not let it loose anymore. Yu-Min and Mo-Rin with their earnest eyes examine Stéphane from all sides, before they give him their hands too. After all what they experianced in their earliest youth, their hesitating is no surprise.
While in many African countries the children in SOS-villages are mostly Aids-orphans, in South Korea they are often "social-orphans". Also the parents of Mo-Rin and her brother Mo-Seck may still be alive. The mother left her husband and the two little children and a burden of debt. The man struggled to handle the situation, but did not succeed. When he didn't know anymore what to do, he brought the two children to an institution which brings children to good places. Mo-Rin and Mo-Seck now belong to the SOS-family of Fabiola. A grandfather from time to time asks for the children. "But where the parents are, we do not know", Fabiola says. They might have tried to build up a new life somewhere.
At the day of the visit of the figure skater, the dramatic past of the children remains behind. After the welcome, the ice star is guided into the kindergarden of the SOS-village, where some 100 children dressed in their school uniforms welcome him with applause. On a screen a YouTube video of a Lambiel-performance is shown and they applaude him to every jump. Then Stéphane comes on the scene and tells the story of his life in English. Translator Lee Kang Hun from the childrens-village translates into Korean. Stéphane owes a lot to his mother because she from the beginning respected his wish to do figure skating. From the time he was seven she brought him almost daily from the little village of Saxon to Lausanne and later to Geneva for training, town which at the time looked really huge to him. "How big Seoul is in comparition!", says Stéphane Lambiel. He finds fascinating such big towns, but could not imagine to live in one of those closely constructed sky-scratchers of the metropole. Then he shows the revolutions which he trained in the garage when he was a child, which were the beginning of his spectacular spins. At the beginning he had dizziness at the time, but he did not give up and trained every day. "Nobody begins and is already good", he says and compares figure skating with playing a music instrument. "First it is only a sound, only after years it becomes music". Then, on the dry of the scene he shows some surprisingly high jumps and some boys try to do the same. Difficult! He encourages the children to believe in themselves: "Give all your soul! WHAT you want to become is not so important", he says. "But do what you are interested in with passion! Be a passionate person!".
At lunch which Fabiola prepared for her children and the guests from Switzerland, expecially the younger children try to get near Stéphane. The 13 years old Min-Jeong radiates at him from the far. She had liked the ice show in Seoul, translates Lee Kang Hun. Expecially Stéphanes second performance to the song "Don't stop the music", where he played the role of a highly in love "gigolo", had her completely. Stéphane himself out of the two performances at the moment preferes the more classical one, in which he shows his gracefulness to a Prélude of Rachmaninov. He starts the performance quietly, and managed that the usually excited korean audiance for moments got silent, just to get them screaming again with his pirouettes. The iceshow that they attended yesterday is the main theme here in Daegu. "So amazing!" they exclamate repeatedly for the event, which normally only wealthy families can witness. "The audiance likes it to see the various facettes of the figure skaters", Lambiel says.
For eating everybody sits on the floor, a small table is the only furniture in the room. The sleeping rooms of the yunsters also hardly have furniture, because it is the habit to role oneself into a blanket for sleeping.
The 14 years old Hyun-Yoo is also excited about his trip to Seoul, but it would almost have been closer to his heart if he could have seen a footballgame (socker), he admits with a smile. THIS, the two teenie girls, who are sitted on a bench in the villages garden - hoping that Stéphane Lambiel walks by again - see differently. "Hi!" they then shout radiating and one of them says giggling: "He is so good looking!". Lambiels nobel features most likely impresse them even more than his skills on the ice .....
That's it. Enjoy!

I tried to translate this - in my opinion very nice - article about Stphanes visit to the SOS childrens village. Thank you very much, mejokuste for the translation. I really admire Stephane for doing this kind of extracurricular social work outside figure skating. I'm also interested in children's social issues, and I'm learning about good organizations like the SOS Village because of him. I wish him all the best in keeping up the good work. The ISU announced today the Innsbruck 2012 Athlete Role Models (ARM) for the inaugural Winter Youth Olympic Games were selected and that figure skating would be represented by Stphane: And Stephane will be such a good role model.
