I'm not really tired this time, but I'm still not totally awake...
"It's my little baby"
This week-end in Lausanne, the Valaisan should win his 5th national title in a row. His sport is his life. He gives absolutely everything to it, and figure skating still amazes him like a child - now and for ever.
Sometimes, a change in the everyday life brings happiness. Or, more precisely, a new happiness. After working with Peter Grütter for many years, Stéphane Lambiel decided to switch coaches in October. We met him in Villars last week.
Is the 3A still the element you're fearing the most? It's a jump which requires more concentration than the others. If I'm not totally fit, I'm having a hard time landing it. I work on this jump watching tapes, to visualize it. I've started working on it in practice too. [Added: he has landed it since the interview was made] Let's not forget that a bit of my meniscus is missing now.
In your left knee... ... and the left leg, at the moment, still isn't as strong as the right one, even though it's about to get there. For the 3A, it's the left leg that gives the height.
And the quad? I land it regularly.
After the surgery on your left knee (on Sept 4), you had to stay off-ice for 2 months. Are you back in shape now? Yes. At the physiotherapist's, everybody was very careful and attentive to each little move I had to do. So yes, I'm back in shape, physically and mentally.
Cédric Monod has been your new coach for a couple of months. What's his job and what do you expect from him? He's there for me, he's always there. To go higher, further. I need someone to be there when things go wrong. I often get mad at myself at practices, I need someone to help me use my energy correctly. I have to stay focused. The other day, I got really mad. Cédric managed to calm me. It was a first victory.
Roger Federer doesn't have any coach anymore, and things are going quite well for him. Would it be possible for a skater not to have a coach? In tennis, it's different. The coach is in the stands. In figure skating, the coach is always nearby, right there next to the ice. We know it and we feel it. In this difficult and "thankless" sport, it's vital for a skater to have a coach. We need to be supported and encouraged, we need to be corrected. As far as I'm concerned, I couldn't skate without coach. Actually, no skater ever wondered about skating without coach, because it would make no sense.
Will the new system work in your favour? I don't know, because I haven't competed with this new system, which is very complicated. I just hope that the judges will see everything I do. I skate with my heart and give all of myself. I don't plan, don't count - never. I'm the one coming up with the ideas for the choreography, the costumes, the jumps, the spins - but I always discuss everything with the people who help me, of course. And if there's something to change, we change it. It's all about communication. Figure skating is my life, it's my little baby.
