well..I saw the movie... I must say it was much too liitle "dynamic" to make it a really good movie, but the costumes were gorgeous and the actors good and the music - well, this musical has been one of my favorites ever since I can remember...so I adore the music..I knew it even before I saw the musical itself but the movie - well, you know, standart...nothing more....

Actually, all the actors except Minnie Driver did their own singing (despite the fact that she's actually a very talented singer in her own right). Emmy Rossum is an operatically trained, self-described lyric-soprano with roots in the New York Metropolitian Opera (she performed with the childrens chorus from 7-12 and continues lessons with her old teacher) Gerard Butler used to sing in a rock band but had no formal vocal training before this film - I actually really enjoy his voice, despite the fact that it's not fully trained - he gave a rough edge to Erik/the Phantom that I didn't think Michael Crawford's voice ever gave to him. The anguish was much more palpable in Gerard Butler's portrayal. Patrick Wilson (Raoul) is a Tony-award nominated vocalist who was trained at Carnegie Mellon University and other places prior to that. Minnie Driver is actually a very talented singer, but her role demanded an actual operatically trained singer (which she is not) so she is the only person they dubbed. The Phantom of the Opera musical/music is something I grew up on, so I waited for this film with apprehension. It was actually much better than I'd anticipated it to be. I have a couple videos of Patrick and Emmy performing live in several venues (in Japan and on Good Morning America), and if anyone wants me to upload them and share, I will do so. Just in case anyone wants definitive proof that the actors DO sing.

^ I'll do it later today - I'm very tired and too lazy to look for it right now. Haha. But there were some scenes that they had to lip sync to (cause Emmy was in a corset and it is impossible to sing properly in a corset), but some they did sing live. They do say it IS her high E in the Phantom of the Opera theme song. (when they're in the boat on the underground river)

Actually, I forgot all about this site: www.phantomphan.net/multimedia/video.phpYou can download various videos about the film there, and if you look, you can see "Emmy Rossum & Patrick Wilson on Good Morning America" which is the one where they sing live.
