Welcome,Danny! I´m a bit of a dummy too, but I have learned A LOT about Ice Dance just by being on this excellent (!!!)board and reading what everybody writes! There are a lot of people here who know all the details.......and they are much more fun than the official ISU page and such.... I know that you will have a good time here!!!! Start browsing through the old entries and have fun! Welcome, and good luck!

Welcome! Well, you're not the only one My technical knowledge isn't that good. Though I would really love to learn more. Btw, a few days ago I watched S&J FS at euros again. And I heard the commentator said John's twizzles are "bad". But I couldn't see the difference between other pairs. So I was wondering, What makes a twizzle good or bad?

What makes a twizzle good or bad? An bad twizzle can mean the skater looks like they are about to trip or fall or they are rocking back and forth rather than standing upright and straight. Good twizzles should be smooth, flowing and continuous. The turns should be of equal speed - not slowing down as the skater does more turns. In ice dance you want to see the couple turning totally in unison. If they don't look like they are together, then one of the skaters is having a problem. Here is a clip of a skater doing some quite good twizzles www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hfEitETO8Q&NR=1The one thing you don't want to see with twizzles is knee action. That is you don't want to see the knee pumping up and down to generate the turn. Hope that explains it. I do pretty crap twizzles myself so I know all about bad ones.

Thanks Kwillyau! It's clear to me now And if you don't mind me asking. What are the other things you look for in ice dancing (to understand the scores and technics a bit more)?

Thanks Kwillyau! It's clear to me now And if you don't mind me asking. What are the other things you look for in ice dancing (to understand the scores and technics a bit more)? Have you got half a day? For myself ice dance is the most complicated of all the disciplines to judge. I have started doing dance judging this year and also I do ice dance. But I can tell you for all the stuff I do know, there is plenty more I don't. It is a constant learning exercise. I will try and give some of the things I understand as briefly as I can. Timing - the dancers skating to the beat of the music. A way to tell this is to tap along to the beat and then see if what they skaters are doing is also hitting that beat. A dancers timing and musicality should be much stronger than a single skaters because it is dance afterall. Lifts - the lifts should look secure and the entries into them and out of them should be seamless. They really shouldn't look like it is a great effort to do them or that you worry that the guy is going to drop the girl. Dance spins - as with all spins you want to see good speed. Spins that slow down are not good and they shouldn't move across the ice from their starting position. If they move that is called travelling. If they are changing position during the spin that should flow easily from one position to the other. You don't want to see the dancers have trouble transitioning from on position to another. Skating quality - the good dancers get down in the knees and ankles without bending at the waist (sticking their butts out). At the same time you want to see the non-skating leg (the one that is not on the ice) extended with a locked knee and pointed toe to create a nice leg line. Hope that helps. If I can think of some more I will put those down.

Kwillyau, you are sooo great!!!! Just what us Skate-Dummies need! Thanks! I have loved IceDance for years and years so I have learned quite a lot about judging and I can see the differences in quality in the twizzles, spins and steps and so on, but it is so great to get some of the rules from a person who actually knows them.

Lol! Thank you very much! You're giving very helpfull info to ice-dance-dummies Yes, I also learned a lot by just watching. But my interest in skating just started this year, and I just watched euros and worlds.. (Upcoming season I will watch everything I can). So I just know small bits, and some info is really helpfull. I also think it's more fun to watch when you can understand the judging a little bit.

Danny, the thing about twizzles is that, although not difficult for some people, (impossible for me) they can become a mental block if they go wrong. They're a required element.
Some commentators may have picked up on a past struggle and have never let it go. Just like some commentators go on about height difference. S&J's twizzles *are* fast, and worthy of more points than slowly executed twizzles.

Just for information about judging of ice dancing, you can check out Communication 1567 on Ice Dancing. isu.sportcentric.net/db//files/serve.php?id=1442This is basically the ice dance bible for the season and is what judges and technical specialists refer to. If you go to page 12, you will see a guideline for Grades of Execution for ice dance elements, including twizzles. Hope it helps explain a few things. But it is pretty detailed and confusing too.

Love twizzles. I enjoy working on them.. am I nuts?
As far as a fear of the ice.. why fear it? I say that because fear is a 'funny' thing.. it is imaginations of many things that COULD happen.. not necessarily what WOULD happen! It's actually a lot easier to skate if you don't stiffen up which happens when you're afraid. Also, if you fall (which doesn't usually hurt THAT much), it's better if you're not resisting it.
