Hindernisse, it's nothing against Russia. Stéphane likes Piter, but he prefers other places and would like to compete in other countries, too. I know he would have liked to go to SA or SC, but there was basically no chance since Buttle and Lysacek had the priority for those... I was hoping he'd get Paris though, as he had been invited there the past 4 seasons. Oh well, maybe the evil French fed didn't want Brian to have to face him that early in the season?! But still I've got a feeling that everyone is nearly fed up with Russia... "To skate in Russia again is ok but it would be far better if I/we/they had other GP assignment..." or something Maybe I should not take everything too serious... You see, I am the only one in this thread who is happy with the secong assignment (CoR)...

No, you're not alone! I'm also quite happy with Stephane's second assignment as well as with the fact that CoR will be in St.Petersburg this year. As to skaters who are reluctant to go to Russia ... well, not everyone is unhappy. Johnny Weir is certainly happy with his assignment to CoR (that's what he wanted). As to some other ... maybe it's cos' it's hard for foreign skaters to win at CoR. Just my guess.

As to some other ... maybe it's cos' it's hard for foreign skaters to win at CoR. Just my guess. I think it's also because most of them don't understand the language and are quite lost (which is a reason why some skaters don't like going to Japan and China either, or, if they're Russian or Chinese for instance, to France where many people don't speak English). Also, probably, because it's quite complicated to travel to Russia (invitation, visa, etc) and they thus know that they won't have their "fan clubs" with them. As far as I'm concerned, I LOVE Russia, I love the culture, the language and the history, and Pretty Piter is the most beautiful city I've ever been to. My "problem" is that I'll be there all summer and I don't feel like organizing a third trip to Russia in a year, it's really a hassle to do that (and a quite expensive one on top of that).

I'm basically going to "fix" my Russian. I'll be there for 10 weeks (July 7 - Sept 19) and will have 8 weeks of intensive private Russian lessons. I'll do a lot of sight-seeing too, of course, I can't wait to see pretty Piter and the summer palaces in the summer (I already spent 5 months in Piter 2 years ago, but it was in winter) and to go back to the Mariinski for instance! And since Sara just posted Stéphane's training schedule in Oberstdorf in the other thread, it means that I won't see him for over 13 weeks.

Wow, Celine 8 weeks in Peter! I don't think I'd survive 8 weeks of intensive private lessons... I've done that myself for 4 weeks last summer and I was pretty exhausted at the end! Surely you'll get chance to do A LOT of sight-seeing and you definitely can't miss Mariinsky! In 4 weeks I've been there 5 times and never get tired of it! Russian ballet is just the best! Where are you staying at? A Russian family?

Wowie...sight seeing and the going to the Mariinsky!! That really must be awesome!!! Do you have family in Russia or did you arrange this via some organisation

Sounds really great!!! Russian is very, very difficult (even for native-speakers) so you've made definately right choice to spend so much time in Russia... I'm sure it will be useful and your Russia will get better. By the way, how long have you benn learning Russia??? And why did you decide to learn this language???

I have always been fascinated by Russia and have always wanted to learn Russian. I started about 3 years ago here in Switzerland, with one hour a week, but I basically didn't learn anything apart from the cyrillic letters. Then I went to Piter in October 2002, had private lessons, learned a lot, had a fantastic winter, saw so many beautiful places, etc. At the end, I could speak some Russian, but then I didn't use it for 1.5 year and forgot a lot. Now I've had Russian lessons again since last October, I'm mostly "refreshing" what I had already learned, and I hope that I'll be able to speak it "fluently" when I come back to Switzerland in September. Russian is a very tough language indeed, but a very beautiful one, and I'm actually quite lucky and can learn languages quite easily. I'm becoming a translator and hope I will be able to work with Russian in the future. This summer, I will have 4x 4 hours of lessons a week and about as much homework, and I hope I will have the same teacher as last time. I'm going with a Swiss organization, and I'll be staying in a host family. I can't wait to see "my" church again (Spas-no-Krovi, I can never remember the names in English or French!), go back to the Mariinski (I hope I can see the Bayaderka again!) and to Ekateriinski dvorets, enjoy concerts at the Philharmonia and admire Aivazovsky's paintings in the Russian museum. Not to mention going to the top of Isaakievsky sobor, to Tchaikovsky's and the Romanov's graves, and to the Ermitage... of course! Piter is the most fascinating and amazing city ever, I could talk about it for hours!!
