They are the same Fourth place exceeded Verner's expectationsConfidence shined from Tomas Verner after his performance at Worlds in Tokyo. Thanks to a freeskate of his life he finished fourth and if it wasn‘t that popped triple axel in short program, he could have a medal. He‘s distinctively overcome his goal – to be in the top ten. „I’m satisfied, fourth place is beyond expectations. It is a very nice ending of a season.“ praised he a while after the competition. After a mistake in SP, he was 9th, but in the LP he improved his personal best score with almost 20 points. At Europeans the LP wasn’t that good and only now he found out how high do the judges value it – he got 155,80 points. „That is huge. I was expecting something high, and when 84 for technic appeared I felt very well on that sofa.“ he said. While the bad triple axel from SP hurt, the triple flip fall during the LP hasn’t spoil his joy. „That was just a question of a bad coordination.“ The 20year old Czech was closing program of the secnod best warm up group, after him only the six best guys skated. He didn’t even manage to watch how his rivals were doing because of many interviews he was giving. He saw just the last skaters, finally silver Takahashi and Jeffrey Buttle. „Everyone from the best group look mostly to the front, they doesn’t look who’s attacking them from behind. But Joubert told me after the competition that I made him nervous. That pleases.“ commented Verner his performance, thanks to which he left behind three out of six leading skaters after SP. While at Europeans he shocked with his lead after short program, here he was attacking from behind. „The position was different, but one must always collect points. Those 7,5 point for Axel were missing for a bronze medal. But a question is, whether I‘d skate such free program if the short program had been good.“ he said about a different development of the two big actions of the season. He has a big fan club in Japan and a lot of Czech flags with his name was in the audience. When leaving the ice he was goofing around with a big heart one of the fans threw him. „The audience helped me a lot. I’m glad Worlds were here in Tokyo, it is nice to feel the support of the audience.“ Now he is preparing to go on a rollercoaster and a walk through Tokyo. During Friday’s short programs he wants to support his training partner, European champion from Italy, Carolina Kostner. He doesn’t plan any huge celebrations of his success. „Here in hotel there is awful air conditioning and dry air, so I have a bit of sore thorat. It wasn‘t good already today. Probably I’m going to leave it for home, with friends.“ he explained. As a fourth man of the competition he can take part in the exhibition on Sunday, where he will show the Pink Panther program as at Europeans. The concrete choreography he will think of in practice, but he is looking forward to it. „Now it is only about entertaining audience and pleasantly finishing the season.“ The World championships was the last competition of the season, but Verner can’t look forward to a long rest. „I am going to study and preparation for a new season is waiting for me in a while.. The ice will melt down so it will be an off ice training.“ said figure skater that studies at Faculty of physical education and sports. After 2nd and 4th place from this years big competitions, only a fight for medals will be expected from him at following competitions. „I proved to the world that I can skate, and mainly I will be expecting that from myself.“ said Verner. He would like to continue in the trend of last years. „So far I have improved every following year, so in the next season we’ll want to be it better than this one.“ he said. Together with the team they will be working on a new long program, that should bring another success. „I would like to set it higher, to be it on a Takahashi level.“ he compared the future program with a new Japanese World’s silver medalist, who won todays free skates.

I was thinking the same. He was 9th after the SP, so there wasn't that much pressure on him going into the free. I don't know if he could have skated THIS well when the pressure would have been higher... whee! I hope so too! though I think it will be difficult...the competition will get stronger too. We'll see Certainly there will be a lot of support for him in Goteborg thank you for the translation Katis!!

the first part is the same as the previous translated, and this is second part: Will Verner go in the track of Barna? Tomas Verner is a t the beginning of a new Olympic cycle in such shape, that according to a coach Frantisek Pechar he can simulate Patr Barna. There can be a vision of an Olympic medal in the distance. Verner won a silver medal this year at Europeans and at Worlds he finished right behind the podium. „The journey can be very similar. Petr also began olympic cycle with a first medal from a big action and it peaked with an European title and a bronze medal at Olympics.“ said Pechar, who coached Barna. He considers 20years Verner as his successor. 15 years divides both skaters‘ international careers and they are different types of skaters. „Tomas is a modern, very creative and adaptable skater. He has a big advantage – he’s an exhibitionist. Petr grew p in a different times. He was a hard worker and very responsible.“ Pechar tried to compare them. The same opinion is shared by a chairwoman of a Czech fs union, Vera Tauchmanova. „He really got used to competitions, the atmosphere and he learned how to time his shape.“ She was very pleased with Verner’s success. „We hoped it could work well. After the short program it was clear he belongs to the world top, because even with that mistake he placed high. We are very happy about it.“ she said. Inspite of succss from Warsaw, Tauchmanova sees some reserves. „He should work on his physical condition and put jumps into second half of the program. And he shoul put there all three allowed combinations.“ she described where more points could be gained. She believes that Verner’s success will direct other skaters and will increase interest in this sport. „Perhaps we will be able to attract more people who would help financially.“ Tauchmanova added. In the audio he talks about the triple axel from the sp and says it was a mistake but they are all satisfied, that fourth place is excellent.

all 3? what? well I do hope he doesn't put the 4-3 combo somewhere at the end - because I don't think he will land it then LOL! and I was actually hoping he'd put that 3f-3t somewhere earlier in the program, because he often lost a lot of points there by not landing that combo because he was too tired or whatsoever... I can imagine being tired after jumping 2 quads, a 3A and being nervous....he can work on that though.... I think he 'lost' most of his points on the PCS part, and the missed jumps...

And he should put also all three combos into his program." somewhere, not at the end. poor boy, not sure how that would work...

ah LOL! well that already sounds better I rather have a clean frontloaded program than a program with the jumps equally divided but not all landed

tomas on goldenskate: (they didn't forget about him this time ) www.goldenskate.com/articles/2006/032307_ml.shtml"I was so surprised about my technical score - over 84 points," said Verner. "I didn't expect that because I knew that I was tired and my spins were weaker than usual. But the two quads were there and [most of the other] jumps as well.
"I was just tired," Verner said of the triple flip. "I didn't get around and I couldn't hold it."

In all the post-worlds articles they mention that if it hadn´t been for that popped 3A in the short program, he would have medaled. But I think that Tomas is very right in saying that perhaps if he had landed the 3A and been third after the SP, he might have popped something in the LP or just been too nervous being in 3rd...I think that in sport you have to go by all parts of the competition and not talk about what could have happened if... I´m so happy for his 4th place! And who cares if its not a medal, he still has time, and fourth in that line-up is an amazing!!! result imo.

It says that today he had the anatomy exam at school. (oh, hope he did well! ) He had his anatomy bok with him iin Tokio but it served mostly as sleeping pills there – when he opened it, he fell asleep in 15 minutes. He doesn’t want his sports successes to help him at the exam because he needs his schoolmates to like him and help him with studies. Because of his illness he couldn’t see Tokio as he planned, but he went to cheer for Carolina to the rink. And experienced the true popularity there – it took him half an hour to get to the toilet, even if it was only some 15 metres. but he was glad he could give autographs and take pics with people. He had many supporters in Japan and he had problems with packing of all the toys he got. He thanks to Ondrej Hotarek who helped him to cramp them up into one bag. And even if it had quite a few kilos, he didn’t have problems at the airport, cause as Ms. Koprivova says „He talked that girl’s there head off“. After his school duties are over he wants to have a week off and the idea that he considers as best now is to go to the sea, lie down and do nothing. >this article< says basicly the same
