Hiya, The BBC Scotland Correspondent has a very intriguing accent, has anyone else heard it? Is he from the Highlands? I suppose we only really know the Glasgow accent very well. Also this week, a Dutchman became Manager of my football team [Spurs] and so I wrote to a Dutch friend, saying "we have two Dutchman in charge - Martin Jol and Frank Arnesen" and she says, "no, Frank is Danish, but speaks Dutch with hardly a trace of an accent". I honestly don't think anybody here in the UK would be able to tell the difference. I find the whole subject of the way people speak, and their accents very interesting, and also the creation of new slang words. This week my friend's 8 year old son used the word "nang" meaning good!
Which accents do you like the sound of?
In the UK, the West Midlands [Birmingham, etc] has a reputation for a very broad accent that alot of people don't like, but I really love it, as it's very unique and cool!

Great topic!
Erm, not sure which BBC Scotland correspondent you mean, because here they are mostly all Scottish here!
I don't think I have a dialect. I speak fairly plain Scots. I'm from Edinburgh - south east Scotland.
I like Aberdonian accents or those from Inverness (Invernessians? ) Out of all the Scots accents, I like Glaswegians the least (the west of Scotland). I'd rather listen to Westlife - or a tap dripping!
I married a North Londoner (Middlesex region) from Dan Sarf. He tawks loik Shane Ritchie. So I sent him back there!
I like Welsh - Ivor the Engine (old childrens' TV program) accents. They have a relaxing lilt to them, as do Irish. Northern Ireland accents are a bit hard to understand though, IMO.
John Kerr has a sort of Scots/American/Canadian accent. Anyone heard it and thought him not to be Scottish? I don't notice it now unless I hear him on radio or TV.

I agree about the Welsh, I like sing-songy accents aswell, and much prefer the County Mayo type of Irish accent to Dublin. Glasgowese can be mystifying at times, as each word merges into the other.
Some posh, aristocratic English accents sound awful! I know some pervy men love it, but when you hear those squashed vowels, it doesn't make me think of sex!
;D Mel wrote: Erm, not sure which BBC Scotland correspondent you mean, because here they are mostly all Scottish here! He's a gormless looking bloke reporting on *Scottish Affairs* for the BBC 6 O'Clock News. He's got very rooollly r's, and sounds like he might come from Tobermorey or somewhere in the Highlands? If I catch his bloomin' name, will post.
Am still deciding on which overseas accent turns me on like Franzi, LOL!

I hate my own accent when I hear myself back... Oh Nooooo! Don't say that! It's Dutch isn't it? I like the sound of Dutch! I had to mingle with a few Ajax Amsterdam Supporters on the tube once! Whenever I hear myself back on tape, I'm always shocked, SHOCKED how *Cockney* I sound. Way more than I imagine I sound in my head. I've got a horrible *Norf London drone* aswell that would prevent me from reading the BBC News! LOL! At least with a Celtic accent, you can get by with it anywhere, and no-one dares think you're *common* ........or thick actually, now I come to think of, especially some people in the medical profession who think if you talk wiv a London accent, you probably need things explaining in a simplified way. Ha! I soon put them right on that score!

At first I was then I realised! I was trying to say COCKNEY but you've sensored me! LOL! Mel, you know what I mean, any way of getting the word on screen? It's a perfectly legitimate word to describe Londoners! LOL!
