I like the trophies that the champions receive. They're cute! Canada is a way bigger FS country than sweden .I whish it was the same here. The population of Sweden is only about 28% of Canada's, so I'm sure that's a major factor. There is a lot to envy about the state of figure skating here, but there is nevertheless a struggle to gain a wider audience. For example, the 2008 Skate Canada International was held in Ottawa, our nation's capital and 4th largest city, and the organizers only managed to sell enough tickets to cover the cost of running the event. When I first entered the arena in Kingston for the 2010 Skate Canada International, I was shocked at how tiny it was relative to Ottawa's (5700 seats vs. 19100 seats). It was sad for me to see that the Canadian federation can only afford to rent smaller venues. We may "big" enough to host a GP event each year, yet it feels like there are only enough fans to barely sustain the sport. Although the men's event is the most popular, Skate Canada always has to work extra hard to keep the talented boys in figure skating because a lot of them are tempted to quit because of the discrimination they face. (It doesn't help that I live in a nation where hockey is practically a religion, and it's supposed to be the ultimate definition of "manliness" or whatever. ) Anyways, I didn't mean to ramble on like that, but my point is that although figure skating is a bigger sport in Canada than it is in Sweden, we do have our problems. Okay, back to the original topic! Do you feel that FS is more popular in Sweden now than a decade ago? I would hope that it's gaining some recognition (even if it's only slowly). by the way this is the coldest winter for 150 years in Sweden.Even down where I live it is never this cold so early. It already started in nov 150 years??? Wow, that is scary. There has been a lot of wacky weather in Europe lately... The food at the arena is here not expensive the opposite .... I don't think inexpensive arena food exists in my country. Not only is it pricey, but they only serve junk, like hot dog and fries, so I always try to sneak in granola bars when I attend a competition. Sasha almost got one more when they pronounced the next scholars name as Alexander Schultheiss... LOL!

Talking about hockey being a religion. It is exactly the same in Sweden.Hockey rules I would say.they get the best arenas the best times to practice etc.Figure skating I think is more popular now in Sweden due to Swedish skaters results but also the swed fed are really doing a big job in selling their sport.Per Adler who came 2 years ago injected some new energy into the swed fed.everything is so different now. They are very open and reaching out. They as all other sports need sponsors hopefully soon they will be there.People tend to stay at home and watch Fs on tv or live stream. That is nice to but for the skaters it is nicer with an audience. The nationals was held in the smaller arena ca 5000 capacity (cheaper) and barely was half full during finals. the foods good price due to volunteers...like 1 am dollar 20 cent for a sandwich
and Yea I like our trophies too with all the names of the champions.
I have seen SOI a couple of times in Canada but the year I was there 2007the last time the arena was not as full as the other years. Now it has been a while so hopefully that has changed.
I notised now to my big surprize that 2500 something viewers have been here on this thread how very nice and nice to also have a discussion Siberia.
Merry Xmas everyone and now on to the after work from Nationals....but it is nice but also empty till next time.

Just one last not
I am not proud over my swedish fed anymore after I heard the announcement of who goes to Euros. Luckily Sasha is a mental healthy person and can take this but, seriously, saying they would look at the entire season was a lie...I have no words. Sasha was by far the best at practice too so give him what he needs international comp at high level. Preparations for OG 2014 ...

Thanks again Maria. I can't imagine how you managed to do all this during the competition... Spending a lot of hours at a cold ice rink and then coming to the forum to share all those pics, reports and impressions everyday doesn't sound easy at all....!! Kudos to our amazing journalist Maria!!! God Jul och Gott Nytt År!

Kudos to our amazing journalist Maria!!! God Jul och Gott Nytt År! This is very true, when I am at a competition and I come back to the hotel, usually I want nothing else than just go to bed and sleep (which I then can't, cos there is too much in my head and I'm awake for hours ) Of course usually we then have to also load off all cards and charge batteries, choose pics for the reports / dailies etc etc, so it's not like that going straight to bed ever happends anyway. But after that I am too drained to post on the MB as well... It's obvious Maria is superwoman
