Talking about hockey being a religion. It is exactly the same in Sweden.Hockey rules I would say.they get the best arenas the best times to practice etc.
We completely understand each other's pain!
.Figure skating I think is more popular now in Sweden due to Swedish skaters results but also the swed fed are really doing a big job in selling their sport.Per Adler who came 2 years ago injected some new energy into the swed fed.everything is so different now. They are very open and reaching out. They as all other sports need sponsors hopefully soon they will be there.
That's good to hear. Progress comes in baby steps most of the time, so although it may take several more years before the sport attracts sufficient audience numbers and sponsors, I believe we're witnessing the begining of greatness in Swedish figure skating! This is the first time I've closely followed a Nationals competition outside of North America, so the Swedish federation must be doing something right!
I have seen SOI a couple of times in Canada but the year I was there 2007the last time the arena was not as full as the other years. Now it has been a while so hopefully that has changed.
No, not really. I live relatively close to Montreal, Canada's 2nd largest city, but CSOI doesn't make stops there anymore because it's too expensive to rent the massive Bell Centre arena (approx. 21000 seats). They did make one exception in April 2010, but that's only because of Joannie Rochette's Olympics bronze medal. The tour will skip Montreal again for 2011, so obviously not enough profit was made.
For the 2008 CSOI at the Scotiabank Place in Ottawa (approx. 19100 seats), there was a decent turn out (but certainly not full) thanks to Jeffrey Buttle's World Championships win. A year later, the same arena didn't even bother using the show lights (which was shocking to me!) because the audience numbers were relatively low. In 2011, CSOI's Ottawa show will be moved to the much smaller Civic Centre (approx. 9800 seats).
I notised now to my big surprize that 2500 something viewers have been here on this thread how very nice and nice to also have a discussion Siberia.
It was very enlightening talking with you! I've learned a lot from reading your updates and your answers to my many questions. Honestly, it's much more interesting for me to talk to fans who love Swedish skating than it is to discuss North American skaters with North American fans. Whenever I do mention something about my country's FS culture, it's only because I want to show how my experience with it helps me to appreciate Sweden's.
Hopefully some of the lurkers who have been quietly reading this thread will join us in the near future.
It's a bird... it's a plane... it's Super Maria! ;D Thank you for helping us mere mortals who don't possess superpowers to fly to Malmö.
and because you are so nice I will do it again at Nordics
I can't wait for February!
