It's not really a review but a few impressions I wrote down on my way home from the gala that took place in Sesto San Giovanni (Milano) on February 5th. It was a show held to celebrate the cultural exchange between 'Regione Lombardia' and St. Petersburg so only Italian and Russian skaters were invited, with the exception of Stanick Jeannette.
Here you go:
I'm so happy I decided to go to Milano eventually! It was refreshing and lot of fun
The gala was great, all skaters were enjoyable even with their falls and the athmosphere is the building very nice, with the crowd being very supportive with all the skaters. The arena, though not big, was absolutely packed.
I'm not gonna write a detailed report as I guess you read Marianna's report already (ETA: you can read her report here: faiellascali.altervista.org/rew_show_sesto.html )
The Russian girls messed pretty bad... I dunno why they had them skate their LP... they were trying difficult jumps like lutz and flip and after a couple of falls they totally fell apart... I mean why go for such difficulties in a gala when you're skating in the spotlight? They could have done 2s and half of the audience wouldn't have notice the difference Nevertheless it was great they got lots of cheers from the crowd.
The boys were much better than the ladies, expecially Artur Gachinsky. 11 yrs old and if he can keep that going, wow, he is quite a performer! He's truly a mini-Plushenko! Amazing steps and jumps and he sold his program to Elvis medley like a seasoned skater! Impressive!
The Russian pair, Kokoreva & Golovkin, was really enjoyable, skating to Ave Maria, too bad about the fall on the throw. He's huuuge! Reminded me a lot of Chuvylyaev!
Petrova&Tikhonov were ON! They were the only ones to skate 2 programs (in the 1st half of the show they 'replaced' Cappellini & Zanni) which got the biggest reception from the crowd second only to Barbara&Mauri. Great throws 3sal and 3loop and even sbs 2axels.
Urmanov, I had never seen him skate live and well Urmanov is still Urmanov... program and costume were very much his style. He seemed a bit slow, landed a couple of nice 3toe but he gave me the impression of the 'tired champion' if that makes sense. Too bad he never had big success in the pro circuit.
Now about the Italian skaters.
DeTrovato skated the same ex program she performed in Torino for the opening cerimony. I really like this girl, she's very enjoyable to watch, nice 2axel, she's very powerful and fast, nice interpretation of the music and it looks like she enjoys it out there. Very pleasant and yet again, another lefty with lots of potential...
DellaMonica, the girl who surprisingly got 3rd at Nationals did a very good job to her ex program. Dunno exactly how old she is but I think she too has got potential.
Valentina skated her lp. Again as for the Russian gals I think it would have been better if she had gone for the sp or an ex program. The LP seemed definitely too long, she did mostly doubles with her arms up, a double axel and fell on a triple if I recall well.
Karel. Sooo nice to see him skate again! He did his sp, he seemed a bit slow but he's sooooo much better than Bacchini! *sigh* Good luck to him in Moscow (and he indeed did a great job there, didn't he? )
Fede&Massi skated their voidy Momix ex. That is definitely a very good ex but I still like the one they skated in Torino better. The music isn't too appealing and it didn't get a crazy reaction from the crowd. Oh well, Massi is hottie with that costume so that alone made the program worth to be seen
Caro skated her sp (I'd have loved to see the 'Fly' ex once again live but we can't always get everything, can we? ) landed a beautiful 3toe, then only 2loop out of steps and 2 axel. She was by far the fastest skater, I really feared she was gonna splat into the boards (the rink was smaller than a competition rink), she didn't hold back at all!
B&M did their new EX to ... darn I forgot the song! (check Marianna's report pls! lol) They play with a rope a little bit and then to tell the truth they don't do much besides for a few lifts and fast strokes but no matter what they do they're such an applealing couple on the ice! Babs looked very much diva with hair extensions She's in awesome shape considering she had a baby just a few months ago! The crowd welcomed them with a roar and as an encore they did the last min of their 'I'll Survive' FD. It was great to see them on the ice again
After the finale with shooting stars falling from the ceeling there was some kind of award cerimony, group pictures and then 'neverending' autograph signings. The main 'victims' were Caro and Babs & Mauri. I think they couldn't leave for over half an hr and then there were still kids and not so young ppl too asking for pics and autographs. One of the main attraction was Babs' baby, she's a real cutie and everyone wanted a pic of mom and baby together!
That's all
