Ok, a little late now but anyway.
I'd really like to congratulate Isa & Oli to a truly wonderful competition altogether, nevermind the actual outcome.
Only yesterday I finally got to see the FDs (Del-Schoe & Dom-Shab) with the German commentary and I just want to share it because I tought it was hilarious (despite the rather serious situation, of course...).
The German commentators just L-O-V-E-D Isa& Oli's FD! I was very pleased to hear that because they criticized them quite a bit for their 'Saloon'-thing in the CD (plus the 'general disposition of French skaters to always exaggerate, especially costume-wise'). Furthermore they did not think that their CD was any better than Dom-Shab's. But then they already loved their OD (especially the technical and athletic components as well as the 'simplicity of the costumes' - I see!) although they had the feeling that 'they did not quite reach the audience' the way that the Russians did.
But then in the free they almost ran out of words good enough to describe how much they liked it. They said things like: 'How can something so simplistic be so beautiful?', 'wonderful', 'breathtaking', 'when they did the final pose I tought it's impossible that 4 minutes had already passed, time just flew by watching them' and 'they have got my gold medal already - no matter what's still going to come, it doesn't get any better than this'.
Furthermore, they praised their skating in general and especially their development over the past years.
When the marks came up they said 'this is going to be extremely hard to beat'... and they thanked them for this wonderful performance.
And then after the Russians finished their program they said things like 'this is a typical couch-free-dance, you sit back and enjoy it but it doesn't knock you off your seat' and 'the final lift looked as heavy as his costume' and also 'this is definitely not a title-winning program'.
Then they were discussing whether or not they even liked Faiella-Scali better in the free (they definitely even preferred Khokhlova-Novitski) and then they said: 'Anyway, one thing just cannot happen - they must not be in first place because then I'm going to fall off my chair half-dead!' Then the marks came up and he said: 'Ok, and now I'm indeed falling off my chair half-dead' he went on: 'You know, sometimes I don't like this job, sometimes I hate it even, and right now it sucks a butt!' and 'the Russians are European Champions and this is really getting to me right now, I'm really getting emotional and I can't understand it' and then 'This is a very sad day for ice dancing.'
and the other dude couldn't really say anything at all, he was just always stuttering in the background in a shocked voice (like, REALLY shocked voice): 'I'm out of words - this must NOT be true.'
Anyway, just wanted to share my pride that we have people with such good taste in the commentary chairs!
I have to say, honestly, after Isa & Oli were not really that far ahead of the Russians after CD & OD, I was pretty sure they wouldn't make it because - for some reason - I really liked the Russians FD in Torino, also in comparison to Isa & Oli who were not 100% on top of their game there.
But after I saw both programs from Zagreb I just thought: 'What the bleep?!'
And I pretty much agree with every word that the commentators said.
I got soooo p***** off when I saw it and I still do when I think about it again. It all reminds me so much of Euros 1999 when my favorite ice dance team from France (Anissina-Peizerat) with an amazing program ('The Man in the Iron Mask') got beaten by the Russians (Krylova-Ovsiannikov) with their percussion.... thing that some people dare to call a free dance.
However, I'll try to get over it and look forward to Worlds.
When I was still doing artistic roller skating and we felt we got cheated at Nationals or Europeans we always said: 'That's probably only because then they will have us win Worlds!' - that never happened, of course
In other words, do you remember Denkova-Staviski ever being European Champion?...
I think the last time that the same couple won Euros & Worlds was Navka-Kostomarov in 2005.
So, a lost battle does not yet mean a lost war!
